An Aging or Dying Loved One

Dear HomePointe:  Can you speak to the challenge of caring for an aging or dying loved one?  We couldn't find a Pointer on the topic.

Response:  Olivia and I spent five years caring for her mother while Parkinsons Disease gradually took her life, so we understand the stress and heartache of this family season very well.  We backed out of nearly everything else during those years because we knew that our primary calling was to "be Jesus" to her unbelieving mother as she approached the end of life.  We will certainly create a Pointer to address the topic.  For now, however, take a look at the following links and resources for help through what we consider one of the most difficult yet important assignments an adult child or spouse will ever face.

TroubledWith.com includes articles and recommended resources on this topic under the heading "Caring for Elderly Parents."   (www.troubledwith.com)

Also, the Focus on the Family Guide to Caring for Aging Loved Ones contains helpful insights and recommendations.  We will order a supply to put in the HomePointe Center - but you can order it from the Lake Pointe bookstore this weekend or click the image to get it online.

If you are in the midst of this season, our prayer is that God will give you the strength and grace needed to face the prolonged grief and quiet sacrifices required.  "Lord - please come along side those of us called to care for an aging or dying loved one.  Help us to 'be Jesus' like we've never been before!"

Great! When I was in college, my dad went through the digressive process of Parkinsons Disease. My mom cared for him as a full-time nurse and it took a lot from her. I wonder if "Caring for Aging Loved Ones" addresses the similar topic of a spouse caring for an ailing spouse?

Yes, it speaks to both situations.
