We are very excited about this week's launch of the campus HomePointe Center and web site. Amid all of the excitement, an explanation is in order.
Why is Lake Pointe putting so much time, money and energy into launching a family ministry? Aren’t the dozens of organizations like Focus on the Family, Family Life and Promise Keepers doing enough? I spent two decades with the biggest (Focus on the Family) heading up the teams that create magazines, books, films, websites, radio programs and other “practical tools for families.” So I’m the first to say such ministries do terrific work. My wife and I write family books, so I’m all for publishing family resources. But neither media ministries nor publisher can do what’s most needed. In fact, I remember sitting in executive sessions with my colleagues discussing why only the local church can create a culture of intentional families among its' people. Unfortunately, few churches have made doing so a key strategic priority. The good news, however, is that a growing number of church leaders are recognizing the need to bring local church family ministry to a whole new level. Acknowledging that God designed marriage and parenting as the primary context of spiritual formation, they want to do more than print such statements in a list of church values. They want to see it become a reality.
Two years ago I felt called to help churches inspire and equip families to become more intentional, so I moved my family from Colorado Springs where we were deeply rooted. I left my work with Focus on the Family in order to join the Lake Pointe team. After working the past year with the leadership of this church and collaberating with church leaders across the nation, I couldn’t be more pleased with what we’re about to launch!
So, what is the point of HomePointe? In short, we want to increase the likelihood those attending Lake Pointe Church will...
- Create a life-long, thriving marriage
- Introduce their children to faith in Christ
- Launch their teens as committed adult believers
How? By asking one very important question - “What’s your plan?” Every four months we will invite the Lake Pointe community to do two things. First, assess how they’ve done at home over the prior 120 day period. Second, create a simple plan for becoming more intentional over the next 120 days. Along the way we will offer suggestions, provide encouragement and recommend practical tools so that each of us can build a strong family “one step at a time.”
I hope you’ll join us as we take the first!
