We All Wear Hand-Me-Downs

Our Minivan Years workshop emphasizes how and why We All Wear Hand-Me-Downs, which is also the title of the latest free HomePointe audio CD.  (You can go to the podcast now by clicking HERE.)

The bottom line is this:  Everyone can give a better family heritage than he or she might have received.  All it takes is a bit of intentionality.

As a baby step in that process, we’ve provided a quick assessment tool designed to help you evaluate the relative strength of your social, emotional and spiritual legacy.  Take a few minutes to reflect upon and score the heritage you received by clicking and printing the following document...

HandMeDownAssessments (53.17 kb)

If you are married, it is best to have both spouses take the assessment and use it as the basis of a date-night discussion.  Thousands of couples have found this process helpful as they become intentional about keeping the strong elements and replacing the weak in order to give the next generation a solid spiritual legacy. To go even further, you can attend our two week Minivan Years workshop during the following ABF classes starting September 20th.

When and Where:     Saturday, 7:15 pm, Rm. W300A-B
                                   Sunday, 9:30 am, Rm. W214
                                   Sunday, 11:00 am, Rm. W204

The Pointe of Home

January 18, 2008 14:21 by Kurt Bruner

What better place to start than to remind ourselves of God’ design for the home?  Most of us have been or will be called to worship God through the intimacy of marriage and the blessing of children.  That’s why we need to understand the Christian view of family summarized in these three action statements…

SHOWING CHRIST - Every marriage is intended to be a masterpiece reflecting THE marriage between God and His people.  (See Ephesians 5:31-33)

RAISING BELIEVERS – Those blessed with the gift of children are called to inspire and nurture faith in the next generation as life’s greatest priority.  (See Deuteronomy 6 and Psalm 78)

BEING JESUS – A strong Christian family is where The Word becomes Flesh and Blood as we conform our lives to the image and example of Christ.   (See I John 3:16)

Based upon these truths, Christians dedicated to a God-honoring home should…

HONOR MARRIAGE:  Pursue a God honoring marriage by giving themselves to a husband or wife through mutual submission and faithful devotion.

PASS THE FAITH:  Intentionally disciple their own children and grandchildren by capturing and creating experiences that deepen the roots of faith.

WALK THE TALK:  Live their faith at home in ways that will attract the next generation and the next door neighbor to Christ.

So, what are we waiting for?  Let’s get busy worshipping God through the masterpiece of marriage and the process of intentional parenting.

The Pointe of HomePointe

January 18, 2008 10:50 by Kurt Bruner

We are very excited about this week's launch of the campus HomePointe Center and web site.  Amid all of the excitement, an explanation is in order.

Why is Lake Pointe putting so much time, money and energy into launching a family ministry?  Aren’t the dozens of organizations like Focus on the Family, Family Life and Promise Keepers doing enough?  I spent two decades with the biggest (Focus on the Family) heading up the teams that create magazines, books, films, websites, radio programs and other “practical tools for families.”  So I’m the first to say such ministries do terrific work. My wife and I write family books, so I’m all for publishing family resources.  But neither media ministries nor publisher can do what’s most needed.  In fact, I remember sitting in executive sessions with my colleagues discussing why only the local church can create a culture of intentional families among its' people.  Unfortunately, few churches have made doing so a key strategic priority.  The good news, however, is that a growing number of church leaders are recognizing the need to bring local church family ministry to a whole new level.  Acknowledging that God designed marriage and parenting as the primary context of spiritual formation, they want to do more than print such statements in a list of church values.  They want to see it become a reality.

Two years ago I felt called to help churches inspire and equip families to become more intentional, so I moved my family from Colorado Springs where we were deeply rooted.  I left my work with Focus on the Family in order to join the Lake Pointe team.  After working the past year with the leadership of this church and collaberating with church leaders across the nation, I couldn’t be more pleased with what we’re about to launch!

So, what is the point of HomePointe?  In short, we want to increase the likelihood those attending Lake Pointe Church will...

- Create a life-long, thriving marriage
- Introduce their children to faith in Christ
- Launch their teens as committed adult believers

How?  By asking one very important question - “What’s your plan?”  Every four months we will invite the Lake Pointe community to do two things.  First, assess how they’ve done at home over the prior 120 day period.  Second, create a simple plan for becoming more intentional over the next 120 days.  Along the way we will offer suggestions, provide encouragement and recommend practical tools so that each of us can build a strong family “one step at a time.”

I hope you’ll join us as we take the first!
